CHANGING THAMES : THE
Ref W299
'The Changing Thames' is a fascinating comparison of photographs from a bygone era set alongside contemporary views. It is a visual and historical record of the numerous changes that have transformed Britain's favourite river. Primitive locks, weirs, mills and general views amply demonstrate the transformation that has taking place over the years; in some cases barely recognisable, while other views remain surprisingly unchanged. Brian Eade's final volume in his Thames trilogy within the 'Britain in Old Photographs' series will provide endless fascination for the numerous interested visitors drawn to the banks and waters of the River Thames.

MIDDLE AND LOWER THAMES: THE
Ref W054H
Rising in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds, the River Thames flows in a generally easterly direction for 215 miles to the sea. It passes Cricklade, Letchlade and Eynsham before reaching Oxford, after which it flows on past Abingdon, Wallingford and Reading. From Sonning, the Thames goes past Henley-on-Thames, renowned for its regatta, to Marlow and then Cookham. Running through spectacular wooded scenery at Cliveden, it passes Maidenhead and flows on to Windsor, celebrated for its castle, and Eton, noted for its college. The river continues past Runnymede, where Magna Carta was signed, and Staines, where the London Stone marked the ancient boundary of London's jurisdiction on the Thames. Flowing past Shepperton and Sunbury, it reaches Hampton Court Palace and then Kingston upon Thames before arriving at Teddington Lock. Down river of Teddington, the Thames becomes tidal. The upper part of the Thames was the focus of an historical journey in the author's previous book, 'The Upper and Middle Thames from Source to Reading' (2007). This second volume, featuring the middle and lower reaches of the non-tidal Thames, is a continuation of the journey down river. In this latest Thames portrait, the evocative collection of 18th century aquatints, 19th century engravings and early 20th century postcards will delight river enthusiasts and riverbank residents alike. Locks, ferries, bridges, inns and boats as well as village and town scenes are depicted, along with images of people enjoying themselves just 'messing about on the river'.

THAMES,THE: A CULTURAL HISTORY
Ref W720H
It may not be the longest, deepest, or widest river in the world but few bodies of water reveal as much about the nation's past and present, or are as suggestive of its future as England River Thames. Tales of legendary lock-keepers and long-vanished weirs evoke the distant past of a river that evolved into a prime commercial artery linking the heart of England with the ports of Europe. In Victorian times, the Thames hosted regattas galore, its new bridges and tunnels were celebrated as marvels of their time and London's river was transformed from sewer to centerpiece of the British Empire. Talk of the Thames Gateway and the effectiveness of the Thames barrier keeps the river in the news today, while the lengthening Thames Path makes the waterway more accessible than ever before. Through quiet meadows, rolling hills, leafy suburbia, industrial sites, and a changing London riverside, Mick Sinclair tracks the Thames from source to sea, documenting internationally known landmarks such as Tower Bridge and Windsor Castle and revealing lesser known features such as Godstow Abbey, Canvey Island the Sandford Lasher, and George Orwell's tranquil grave.

THAMES PATH, THE
Ref W605
The Thames Path takes the walker from the Thames barrier in London to the source of this great river 180 miles away in rural Gloucestershire. The Thames Path was officially opened as a national trail in 1996, and has since been improved so that most of the route now runs along public footpaths or bridleways. The Thames, once an important waterway, links a string of historic sites - from Greenwich, the Houses of Parliament and Lambeth Palace in the city, to rural Hampton Court Palace and Runnymede. The beautiful upper reaches of the path run through the peaceful countryside of Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. The climax is the 22 miles of the infant Thames leading to the river's source just below the Roman Foss Way. Routes described in 20 sections between four and 16 miles in length Illustrated with OS mapping

UPPER AND MIDDLE THAMES FROM SOURCE TO READING, THE
Ref W052H
Rising in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds, the Thames flows in a generally easterly direction for 215 miles to the sea. In its upper reaches, the river glides through meadows, passing Cricklade, Lechlade and Eynsham. Part of the upper rivers enchantment lies in the fact that much of the countryside has a timelessness about it as villages are often some distance from its banks. Leaving the 'dreaming spires' of the city of Oxford, the Thames passes Abingdon and Wallingford before running through attractive scenery at the Goring Gap, between the Berkshire Downs and Chiltern Hills. From Pangbourne, the river flows past Caversham and Reading to its Junction with the Kennet and Avon Canal. In this new study of the upper and middle Thames, 18th-century aquatints, 19th-century engravings and old photographs of the river and the settlements along its banks illustrate an historical journey from source to Reading. Ancient bridges, ferries, flash locks and pound locks are featured, plus centuries-old churches, mills and inns. River craft used for work and pleasure are portrayed, too. This collection will engage the interest of river users, ramblers and residents alike who enjoy the history of this most famous of Britain's rivers.
